Last year's Blues Foundation inductee Joe Louis Walker will release his new album, Hornet's Nest,February 25, on Alligator Records. I have been a big fan of JLW since 2009's Between A Rock And The Blues. There has been a string of excellent CDs since then and Hornet's Nest is no exception!
The title track kicks things off with a blues/rock scorcher that speaks of jealousy and retaliation to anyone who messes around in your business. "All I Wanted To Do" is an R&B tune featuring Muscle Shoals' horn section. Things slow down on "As The Sun Goes Down." "Stick A Fork In Me" has some clever lyrics that refer to the end of a relationship. This is a true blues song featuring a wonderful groove between the guitar and piano.
The gospel flavor of "Don't Let Go" had me bouncing in my desk chair. "Ramblin' Soul" is a straight-ahead blues rocker that is guaranteed to get the juices flowing. "Ride On Baby" has a Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes feel to it. The Funk of " Soul City " fits in beautifully here and it will inspire a groove-alicious singalong! Chicago Blues ala Muddy Waters is what's up next on the slidefest of"I'm Gonna Walk Outside." "Not In Kansas Anymore" has a 70's rock feel to it and closing out this CD is "Keep The Faith." Like a DJ closing out the night on the dance floor with a slow song, this is the perfect ending to a wonderful CD. I highly recommend that you pick up a copy!
JLW's guitar and vocals are fiery and passionate throughout this project. The CD is produced by Tom Hambridge who is also featured on drums, tambourine, percussion and background vocals. Additional players are Reese Wynans on piano, Wurlitzer piano and Hammond B-3 organ, Rob McNelley on guitar and Tommy MacDonald on bass.
